The church and convent of Santa Maria del Gesù in Ragusa Ibla. Today a UNESCO heritage site, but once a place of prayer and hard work of the observant friars minor.
There was a vegetable garden, warehouses, a refectory, a kitchen, and even a large cistern made from the rock. A small, autonomous world in which the observant friars minor of the convent of Santa Maria del Gesù spent their days. Today, the building and the church are a UNESCO World Heritage site, once they were a place of prayer and work, especially to help the poor, the sick and the dying.
In 1636 the friars decided to build the structure to the south of the city in Ragusa Ibla: a choice that proved difficult due to the unfavourable terrain. The administration of the time, those citizens who could afford to, and Don Vincenzo Campolo, baron of San Blasi and Mastro, subsidised the work. The end result was a simple place of great industriousness: intimate, welcoming, and functional. In fact, the rooms were well arranged over four floors: the friars’ cells were located on the top floor; the refectory and the kitchen, the cloister and common rooms were on the third; the warehouses and cistern on the second, and finally, the premises used to serve the cultivated land on the first. The 1693 earthquake spared the convent but not the church, which was rebuilt the following century. The façade has a gabled shape, typical of the churches of the Friars Minor. There is also a small bell tower and semi-column features. The interior is full of stuccoes and decorations.
