Palazzo Zacco

An example of Iblean Baroque, Palazzo Zacco is among the eighteen UNESCO monuments of Ragusa. It has precious balconies, enriched with mythological characters. Inside it houses the Museo del Tempo Contadino (Museum of the Peasant Age).
A giant mascaron that sticks its tongue out at passers-by. A siren that bewitches those who observe her. There are also anthropomorphic figures and musicians. Palazzo Zacco in Ragusa is a provocative example of Iblean Baroque and its imagination. We are in the old town, in via San Vito: here in the second half of the eighteenth century, Baron Melfi di Sant'Antonio had a sumptuous palace built. A century later it was bought by the Zacco family from whom it took its name.
Two façades, six large balconies: this precious Baroque testimony is among the eighteen UNESCO World Heritage sites that are located in the city.
As you get nearer, you’ll notice the sculptural richness of the palace: it seems to be animated by odd creatures, in full Baroque allegory style. The provocative siren, the amused mascaron, the maracas, flute and trumpet players, anthropomorphic characters, and there is also the family coat of arms and a statue of St. Michael the Archangel to embellish the facades.
A visit inside will be like diving into the rural farm life of the past: in fact, Palazzo Zacco houses the Museo del Tempo Contadino (Museum of The Peasant Age) and the Carmelo Cappello Civic Collection of the well-known sculptor from Ragusa.
Books, music, but also good food, theatre, and shows. Ragusa offers quality events all year round that attract thousands of visitors from all over Sicily and beyond. Tourists who are in the city in those days are fascinated by the great human warmth and cultural richness that the city gives off.
There are numerous summer events, but also winter in Ragusa is livened up by various theatre and music festivals: Melodica, Ibla Classica International for music; the season at the Donnafugata Theatre and Palchi Diversi (Different Stages) for the theatre (the latter moves to the beautiful backdrop of the Castle of Donnafugata for the summer version Palchi Diversi Estate al castello), to name but a few.
In short, Ragusa is to be lived all year round!
