Seat of the bishopric and the seminary, the Palazzo Vescovile Schininà is located in the centre of Upper Ragusa. Blessed Maria Schininà, foundress of the order of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, was born here.
The Palazzo Vescovile Schininà is still the seat of the bishopric and the seminary today. At the end of the eighteenth century, it was the home to the Schininà family. It was built in the old town of upper Ragusa by Don Mario Schininà Cosentini of the Marquises of Sant'Elia, then passed to the children who divided it in half. One part was preserved by the family that still lives there, the other hosted the Prefecture for almost ten years and then was donated to the cathedral of San Giovanni Battista.
In this palace, blessed Maria Schininà, granddaughter of Don Mario, was born. She dedicated her whole life to the poor of the city and founded the order of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Her help was valuable after the Messina earthquake 1900s.
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the palace has a linear and elegant main façade overlooking via Roma. It is embellished with six pitch stone columns that support as many balconies, while a seventh balcony is placed above the central entrance. There are actually two different entrances, one opens onto a covered atrium, the other onto a courtyard. There is also an internal garden where Baron Giuseppe Schininà, a great expert in botany, dedicated himself to the care of rare and precious species, some of which are still there today.
