The extravagant balconies inhabited by allegorical mascarons are its most characteristic feature. Palazzo Cosentini in Ragusa Ibla is an imposing Baroque building, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Palazzo Cosentini bears the name of the family that built it. It was built at the end of the eighteenth century by Baron Raffaele Cosentini and his son Giuseppe, near the church of Itria (inserire link alla scheda) and Palazzo della Cancelleria. Its position was strategic then in the Ragusa Ibla of the time, at the crossroads of the two most important streets of that period, the Salita Commendatore and San Rocco. Even today you can see the corner aedicule dedicated to san Francesco di Paola, located at the side of the staircase that connected the lower and upper neighbourhoods.
The façade of Palazzo Cosentini, inserted among the eighteen UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Ragusa, is a tribute to the most characteristic features of Iblean Baroque, the inevitable mascarons, the musicians, the commoners and even a shell. Just stand in front of the main facade to get a look at them.
But that’s not all: on the side of the building there is only one balcony whose ledges are decorated with the mascaruna i l'Archi (the mascarons of the Arches), named after the neighbourhood. There are five mascarons with symbolic animals in their mouths, dominated by allegorical figures of abundance: you’ll admire busty women, and men carrying cornucopias full of fruit. A message, not even that veiled, that the Cosentini family wanted to send to the city regarding its wealth.
