A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Palazzo Bertini is famous for its mascarons (large, sculpted masks). In Baroque allegory they represent the aristocrat, the merchant, and the pauper and accompany every wayfarer with a mocking look.
The aristocrat, the merchant, and the pauper. Three mascarons that wink, tease, and mock you! They represent the power of social class, of money, and lastly, of self-irony, and are the most characteristic feature of Palazzo Bertini, located at the bottom of c.so Italia. One of the eighteen UNESCO monuments of Ragusa, it is one of the most historical buildings in the city. It was built at the end of the 1700 by Don Floridia, then half a century later it was bought by the Bertini family whose name it retains.
Over time it has been subjected to some renovation work mainly due to the lowering of the road that modified the façade, but its mascarons are always there, ready to joke with those who look at them, even with you!
Baroque allegory means them to represent the beggar (the pauper), the nobleman (the aristocrat), and the man of the East (the merchant). You can recognize them by their appearance: the pauper from his deformed face with a big nose and toothless mouth, the aristocrat is more elegant and has a feathered hat on his head, while the oriental merchant is wearing a turban and a large pearl earring. Their positioning is by no means accidental. Placed above the three previous doorways, they look at anyone who passes by: the aristocrat is in the middle, on his left the merchant who with a provocative gaze scrutinizes those who arrive from Ibla, on the right instead is the pauper who accompanies the passer-by towards the city.
