It is the symbol of Ragusa Ibla. A UNESCO World Heritage site, a riot of majesty and wealth, the duomo of San Giorgio is as beautiful outside as it is precious inside, with paintings, simulacra, and even a monumental remnant from 1500.

Sometimes words don’t do something justice. Like now.
How can we best describe the sense of magnificence you’ll feel when you find yourself in front of the majestic staircase of the cathedral of San Giorgio in Ragusa Ibla? Its whiteness is blinding. You’ll have to look right up to the top to be able to grasp it in full.
How can we tell you about the richness of its details? The decorations of the wooden doors, the friezes, and the reliefs of the important gate, the elegance of the statues of san Giorgio and san Giacomo below, and those of san Pietro and san Paolo at the top. How can we express just how much beauty awaits you?

A UNESCO World Heritage site, San Giorgio is the must-see in Ragusa Ibla. It is appreciated by directors and photographers, loved by tourists, and protected by its faithful.

Its slightly oblique positioning with respect to the square, intentionally designed by the architect Rosario Gagliardi of Noto, makes it special: it seems to be posing for the millions of gazing faces that over the centuries have admired it. Work was completed in 1775, the date is engraved on the cusp under the cross, thirty years after it had been decided to rebuild the church in a more central position than the original one next to the Giardino Ibleo (linkare alla scheda del giardino). The 1693 earthquake had in fact almost totally destroyed the old building, of which today it is possible to admire only the gate (link alla scheda), so the community decided to build it where the church of san Nicola used to stand.

The three-nave interiors are full of precious canvases: D'Anna, Tresca, and Manno are just some of the artists of the time who did them.  Admire the statue of Saint George on horseback, by the sculptor Bagnasco from Palermo, the large case-reliquary in embossed silver foil by the Palermo silversmith Domenico La Villa, both carried by the faithful during procession for the patronal feast in spring, and the 3,368-pipe organ, so precious that the same company that made it, the "Serassi" of Bergamo, called it the "Organum maximum".

What gem is not to be missed? It is what remains of the monumental limestone altarpiece by Antonino Gagini, dating back to the sixteenth century, preserved in the sacristy.
