A World Heritage site, the church of Santa Maria delle Scale offers a unique view of the whole of Ragusa Ibla. Inside it preserves pre-earthquake Gothic-style testimonies: a real rarity.  

From its staircase you’ll see a panorama that will be hard to forget. The sky opens out like the curtain on a stage and Ragusa Ibla appears on the scene. It looks painted, so meticulous as to be delicate, so austere as to appear even superb. A unique photograph of our oldest neighbourhood:  it is just one of the wonders that the church of Santa Maria delle Scale has in store for you.

We are on the road that takes you from Upper Ragusa to Ibla, in one of the most beautiful religious buildings of our island. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has ancient origins dating back to the thirteenth century and offers valuable architectural evidence of pre-earthquake Ragusa. This is truly a rarity.

Inside you can admire a nave and some stony Gothic-style remains that the earthquake spared. In reality, the church emerged almost completely unscathed from the violent earthquake; its structural changes were dictated more by the need for space for an increasingly large community of the faithful, than by anything else. Over time it was extended further and even rotated compared to its previous positioning. It remains a must-see stop on the journey to discover the Iblean monumental beauties.
