On the way down towards Ibla, its blue dome stands out. The church of Santa Maria dell'Itria is a masterpiece of the Iblean Baroque. A UNESCO heritage site, it is to be admired slowly, both inside and out.
It's a rare gem – you admire it, and feel like doing so forever. If you choose to reach Ragusa Ibla on foot, coming down from c.so Italia, you’ll see it immediately. You’ll admire its blue dome and the shine of its tiles. which stand out in the entire old district: such a suggestive image!
The church of Santa Maria dell'Itria is a real architectural jewel of Iblean Baroque. Inside and out. We’ll reveal only a few details, leaving you the pleasure to discover this precious place in person, a heritage site protected by UNESCO.
It may have been built in the fifteenth century – according to some even in the one before – on the remains of a Byzantine church. The church of Itria was taken back in the mid-1600s by the Order of the Knights of Malta, whose cross is still visible on the arch above the entrance door. Originally dedicated to san Giuliano l’Ospitaliere (Saint Julian the Hospitaller) because it was used as a hospital for travellers and the sick, it was then consecrated to the Madonna dell'Itria of which it is still possible to admire a canvas exhibited on the central altar. Spared by the 1693 earthquake, the church was enlarged over the following century.
Outside is the wonderful bell tower that culminates in a balustrade and then a dome, embellished with Caltagirone ceramics depicting flowers and vases in rococo style. Instead, the façade is totally Baroque. The three-nave interior stands out with precious paintings, decorations, altars, and columns. To be admired slowly.
