The church of S. Francesco d’Assisi, called the Immacolata, and the adjoining convent, date back to 1200. Rebuilt almost totally after the 1693 earthquake, today they are UNESCO World Heritage monuments.

Extremely old, the remains of its most remote part even date back to the twelfth century. The church of San Francesco d'Assisi, a UNESCO site, known as the church of the Immacolata, will give you back a cross-section of the city's history. While the exact year of construction is unknown, it is assumed it dates back to the first decades of 1200, when in the city, then Ragusa Ibla, a community of Franciscans appeared, who decided to settle on the edge of the city perimeter to help the most needy, and at the same time enjoy the silence and tranquillity for prayer.
There are traces of an incisive expansion intervention between the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century that preserved only the bell tower and the main façade of the ancient building. But it was the disastrous earthquake of 1693 that wiped out its most archaic soul. The convent was completely torn down, and the church was mostly, too: the belfry and the Gothic façade collapsed, only the gate and the base of the bell tower remain of the thirteenth-century structure, while inside there are few testimonies of the sixteenth-century interventions. The population did not lose heart and in the years following the earthquake, they rebuilt both the church and the convent where they had once stood, and where you can admire them still today.
