It was the sacramental church of the church of San Giovanni, and then of San Giorgio. On the cornice of the aisles, there are sculptures depicting skulls with the coats of arms of kings and popes that symbolize the precariousness of earthly riches. But there are also the statues of San Giovanni Evangelista and the Addolorata (Our Lady of Sorrows), and then the evocative painting of the Santi e delle Anime Purganti (the Saints and the Purgative Souls), from between the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century by Francesco Manno. There are many beauties kept inside the church of the Santissime Anime del Purgatorio in Ragusa Ibla, however its imposing staircase will be what wins you over!
You’ll notice it as soon as you arrive in Piazza della Repubblica, also called Piazza degli Archi. It’s imposing and elegant, and from the top, just before entering the church, you’ll get a view of the whole square.
Among the most beautiful religious buildings in Ragusa Ibla, also a UNESCO World Heritage site, the church of Purgatorio was built in the first half of the 1600s. After the 1693 earthquake, which left it almost intact, it became the sacramental church of San Giovanni, meaning the sacraments were administered on behalf of the church of San Giovanni that in the meantime had been transferred by the faithful to Upper Ragusa. A few years later, it came under the jurisdiction of the church of San Giorgio, becoming the sacramental church of the Iblean cathedral. Throughout the second half of the eighteenth century, it was subjected to expansion and completion work, to be returned to the city in 1787.
