UNESCO World Heritage site, the cathedral of San Giovanni Battista (Saint John the Baptist) in Ragusa is a fine example of Iblean late Baroque. Its façade is lavish, and its interiors are impressive. Among the valuable works there is a wooden statue of the patron saint.
Books, music, but also good food, theatre, and shows. Ragusa offers quality events all year round that attract thousands of visitors from all over Sicily and beyond. Tourists who are in the city in those days are fascinated by the great human warmth and cultural richness that the city gives off.
There are numerous summer events, but also winter in Ragusa is livened up by various theatre and music festivals: Melodica, Ibla Classica International for music; the season at the Donnafugata Theatre and Palchi Diversi (Different Stages) for the theatre (the latter moves to the beautiful backdrop of the Castle of Donnafugata for the summer version Palchi Diversi Estate al castello), to name but a few.
In short, Ragusa is to be lived all year round!

A superb example of Ragusan late Baroque, and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the cathedral of San Giovanni Battista (Saint John the Baptist) in Ragusa towers over the central square San Giovanni in the old town. Built after the devastating 1693 earthquake, it was consecrated in 1778 and declared a cathedral in 1950.
Its majestic late-Baroque façade will leave you breathless. It is divided into five sections by six Corinthian columns. The main gate, on top of which an aedicule preserving the statue of the Immaculate Virgin with the statues of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist on either side, is precious. Looking up you will see two solar clocks dated 1751, one that measures time in "Italic hours", from sunset to sunset, the other in "French hours", from midnight to midnight, and then a tympanum that houses an electric clock surmounted by a bell. The bell tower with its four imposing bells – we recommend a visit– the large churchyard bordered by a pitch stone balustrade, and the two gardens on either side of the cathedral, complete the picture outside.
Crossing the threshold, your attention will be captured by the two-toned pitch stone floor with limestone inlays, and by the fourteen Corinthian columns also in pitch stone but plastered in white broken up by the gilded capitals. Three naves, a magnificent depth: the cathedral has an obvious architectural arrogance.
A tip? Once at the end of the cathedral, look up at the shimmering central dome dominating from above.
Among the precious works that you can admire inside there is the eighteenth-century canvas depicting san Filippo Neri by Sebastiano Conca. The first recess on the right houses the elegant Baptistery, with pictorial decorations by Salvatore Cascone, and the bronze group from 1958 by Carmelo Cappello. And then there’s the Serassi organ from 1858, and the wooden statue of San Giovanni Battista by Carmelo Licitra in 1861.
