The Cathedral Museum, set up in Palazzo Garofalo in the city centre, is a must visit. It preserves rare and precious testimonies of the religious and liturgical life of Ragusa.

Books, music, but also good food, theatre, and showsRagusa offers quality events all year round that attract thousands of visitors from all over Sicily and beyond. Tourists who are in the city in those days are fascinated by the great human warmth and cultural richness that the city gives off.

There are numerous summer events, but also winter in Ragusa is livened up by various theatre and music festivals: Melodica, Ibla Classica International for music; the season at the Donnafugata Theatre and Palchi Diversi (Different Stages) for the theatre (the latter moves to the beautiful backdrop of the Castle of Donnafugata for the summer version Palchi Diversi Estate al castello), to name but a few.

In short, Ragusa is to be lived all year round!

In short, Ragusa is to be lived all year round!

Eight rooms over an area of 400 square metres. The Cathedral Museum tells you about the religious identity of Ragusa from the pre-1693-earthquake period until the establishment of the Diocese of Ragusa in 1950. Set up on the main floor of the very central Palazzo Garofalo, a few metres from the Cathedral of San Giovanni, it houses testimonies of inestimable value. For example, there’s the fifteenth-century case reliquary of San Giorgio in ivory and inlaid wood, or the two corporal silk bags embroidered in gold and coral from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They are located in the first room that is a dive into the most distant past.

Instead, the second room is a tribute to the patron saint of Ragusa, St. John the Baptist. Among the wonders that you can admire there is the eighteenth-century Holy Ark that the faithful carry in procession on the days of the patronal feast, from 27th to 29th August. Inside it, one of the saint’s teeth is preserved, set in the mouth of a head made out of silver, lying on a silver and gilded copper plate. Really valuable!

The third room is dedicated to the liturgical life of the city. It is full of altar bells, chalices, Eucharistic display cases and much more. This brings us to the fourth room with the fourteen stations of the Via Crucis painted in oil on canvas in 1775 by the Sicilian painter Stefano Ragazzi, once exhibited inside the Cathedral. In the middle of the room there is a cusp panel, once preserved in the church of San Vito, which depicts some sacred scenes.

The journey is coming to an end. The fifth room is devoted to the establishment of the Diocese of Ragusa on May 6th, 1950. The precious diocesan pastoral in silver fused with enamels and gems designed by Duilio Cambellotti in 1955 is wonderful. There are even more precious exhibits in the sixth room with other testimonies of the parish life of the cathedral between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Finally, the seventh and eighth rooms preserve a cartographic corpus, donated by patron Cesare Zipelli, Ragusan by adoption and a prominent personality of the last century, which tells the story of the Demone, Mazara, and Noto valleys and their cities between 1500 and 1800.
