The Museum of the Duomo of San Giorgio recounts the last 1,000 years of Ragusa Ibla through documents, precious pieces, and the reconstruction of their history. You’ll experience the evolution of the city in person.

It is perhaps the first stop that we recommend you make once you arrive in Ragusa Ibla. Do you know why? The Museum of the Duomo of San Giorgio in the heart of the Baroque district offers you a historical-religious overview of the last millennium of life in the city. An overall picture that you’ll find engaging thanks to the continuous references to testimonies that you will then go and admire in person during your visit to Ibla.

Set up in 2009, the museum is arranged on two floors
On the ground floor you can examine in depth the local toponymy and historical and political events of Ibla by delving into very ancient documents. Here the projects that inspired the construction of the current Duomo are also preserved, plus stony fragments from the old structure, of which the gate remains to the south of the neighbourhood.
The first floor is instead a chest containing the Tesori del duomo (treasures), rare and precious pieces, some very ancient, telling of the history and the people who came into contact with it over the centuries: it will be like experiencing the evolution of the entire community in person. We’ll reveal just some of the rarities preserved here: the silver and copper processional Cross made by the Ragusan goldsmith Lucio Arizzi, the gold monstrance studded with diamonds, emeralds, and rubies by Giuseppe Vella, the Byzantine-made enkolpion, and the case dedicated to ex voto, the objects donated by the faithful in thanks for having received a grace. The rest we’ll let you discover for yourself ...
