The reconstruction of human existence in the area from prehistoric times to the Medieval Age. The Archaeological Museum of Kamarina takes you on a journey through history, thanks to rare and precious finds.
Once, the temple of Athena stood here; it was the highest point in the ancient colony founded by the Siracusans in 600 BC. Today, the Archaeological Museum of Kamarina has a collection of valuable testimonies of human existence in this area from prehistoric times to the Medieval Age. The promontory of Cammarana, as the area is called, was in fact inhabited from the ancient Bronze Age. In 1800 the temple, which in the meantime had been transformed into a church dedicated to the Madonna, was incorporated into a farm. After that it became the museum that today houses over 6,800 exhibits, divided over three pavilions and seven exhibition halls.
The exhibition itinerary accompanies you through the history of the Camarina area. There is even a pavilion dedicated to underwater archaeology with the finds that the sea in front of Camarina decided to return to it. The hall of prehistory is dedicated to the Bronze Age, and the archaic Kamarina room to the necropolis of Rifriscolaro. The cults that were widespread in the area, in particular those worshipping Demeter and Kore, are evoked in the Persephone room, while the hall of the Temple of Athena contains the finds dating back to the ancient temple consecrated to the goddess of wisdom. The classical Kamarina room reproduces the urban history of Camarina from the fifth century BC, and finally, the necropolis room of Passo Marinaro houses the grave goods, dating back to the fifth and fourth centuries BC, found in the excavations carried out at the classical necropolis of Passo Marinaro.
A good reason for visiting the Museum of Kamarina and its priceless testimonies is to see the collection of amphorae, which are among the most important both for number and Mediterranean type, plus the exceedingly rare Camarina civic cards from the mid-fifth century BC – the identity cards of the time.
