The Archway of San Giorgio is among the oldest remains of Ragusa Ibla. It dates back to 1400 and is an example of Gothic-Catalan architecture. It belonged to the old church of San Giorgio, which was completely destroyed by the 1693 earthquake.
The Archway of San Giorgio is among the very few things of the ancient church of San Giorgio in Ragusa Ibla that were spared by the violent earthquake of 1693. You can find it just before the entrance to the Giardino Ibleo, where once the church dedicated to the holy knight stood.
It is an elegant fifteenth-century example of Gothic-Catalan architecture, made out of blocks of soft, slightly pinkish limestone. The lunette above the lintel is particular: it represents the famous legend surrounding the saint. Saint George is depicted on horseback, in the act of piercing the dragon with his sword, while the princess, on her knees, is looking at him terrified.
Let your eyes linger on the interstices of the columns depicting arts and crafts, and a series of monstrous figures, surrounded by leaves and flowers – unique details of the ancient masters’ dexterity.
