Palazzo Garofalo is part of the Ragusan identity. A famous café in the fascist period, then home to offices and one of the oldest bookstores in the city, today it houses the Cathedral Museum.

At one time the aroma of coffee filled its rooms, which echoed with the music from the early decades of the twentieth century, and the laughter of the many customers who spent their evenings at the Caffè Casina delle Rose on the ground floor. Palazzo Garofalo, in c.so Italia, a few metres from the cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, is one of the most important buildings of the historical memory and city identity of Ragusa.

It was built by the descendants of one of the oldest families in the city, the Garofalo, among the first to move to contrada del Patro after the 1693 earthquake. Later it was divided in half. One part continued to be the private residence of one of the Garofalo heirs, the other was sold. During the years of fascism, it hosted the Caffè Casina delle Rose, welcoming the chit chat of the time and even the entertainment – the large courtyard was used as a dance floor. Then it became home to offices and some commercial premises, such as the historic Paolino bookstore, one of the oldest in the city. Later it was forgotten.

A few years ago, it was reborn: the entire building was purchased by the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and underwent a lengthy renovation.

Today it houses the Cultural Centre of Palazzo Garofalo: on the main floor there is the Cathedral Museum which preserves precious testimonies of the ecclesiastical and religious life of Ragusa from the period before the 1693 earthquake until the 1950s, while the ground floor is used as an auditorium and for the exhibition halls.
