The works by Duilio Cambellotti are the most precious treasures preserved at the Prefecture of Ragusa. Built in the 1930s, the palace celebrates with pomp and style the new social status of the city as a province
Built by the architect Ugo Tarchi and embellished with frescoes by the master Duilio Cambellotti, Government House in Ragusa is one of the most precious buildings in the city. It forms a single block with Palazzo di Città that populates the façade on the c.so Italia side of the building, while the Prefecture occupies the other three sides with the main entrance from via Mario Rapisardi. Once the palace also housed the Police Headquarters, which then moved to another neighbourhood. In the intentions of the designers of the time, Government House should have represented the importance of Ragusa being elevated to the status of a province. And so it was. The construction work began in 1929 and ended in 1933, presenting us with a sumptuous building, celebrated even by Leonardo Sciascia in his book Invenzione di una prefettura.
A quadrangular courtyard enhanced by four Doric columns each of which surmounted by a Roman eagle precedes the entrance to the palace. Inside, right from the first windows that you come across as you climb, there is an exaltation of pomp and power. Columns, arches, and friezes adorn the interiors, whose furnishings were designed by Tarchi himself, but it is the temperas by Duilio Cambellotti that are the most precious treasures preserved here. They depict the deeds of fascism, such as the victory of Vittorio Veneto and the march on Rome, but also the beauty of the Iblean landscape, and the new industriousness of the city that was moving away from rural life to embrace industrial modernity.
