From its 50 metres high, the bell tower of the cathedral of San Giovanni Battista scrutinizes Ragusa. A visit inside treats you to unexpected surprises and a spectacular view
It grabs your eye: from its height of 50 metres, it controls and protects the city. The bell tower of the cathedral of San Giovanni in Ragusa towers on the left-hand side of the Baroque façade. It has a square base, which is embellished on the top by a conical-shaped cusp. A little further down, four imposing bells overlook each side of the tower.
But it’s inside that the bell tower is full of surprises!
During the Second World War, it was chosen as a military garrison because of its height, welcoming dozens of sentinels on their exhausting surveillance shifts. Partly out of boredom, partly out of nostalgia, partly out of fear, the soldiers got used to engraving their thoughts and reflections on the white walls. They are still visible today. Read them – they are a touching step back in time.
If you’re in good physical shape, arm yourself with a little courage and climb even higher: a narrow 36-step spiral staircase will take you up to the third order of the bell tower. It's worth it: you can admire the whole city and the Iblean countryside. Truly spectacular!
