The ‘Art Nouveau city’, Vittoria has elegant palaces, fine churches, a beautiful municipal theatre and even a castle. Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG is native here, and it the sea is nearby.

The ‘Art Nouveau’ City, and in fact, Vittoria is a riot of sinuous and ornamental buildings with decorative lines, the balanced interweaving of iron, glass, stone and concrete typical of this architectural style of the early twentieth century, so much so that it deserves this name. We recommend you visit it, just a few kilometres from Ragusa in the valley of the River Ippari.
It’s an important agricultural centre.  Here, excellent wine is produced – have you ever tasted Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG? But it is also known for flower production, in particular the carnation. It is about fifteen kilometres from the sea – if you can, go to the coast to the seaside resort of Scoglitti, which has a beautiful golden beach ideal for long relaxing walks at any time of the year. Near Scoglitti there is also the important archaeological site of Kamarina, the Greek colony of Siracusa of the sixth century BC.

In Vittoria we suggest you visit the Vittoria Colonna Municipal Theatre, which takes its name from the Countess of Modica, daughter of viceroy Marcantonio Colonna. It was she who set the building of the village in motion around the Colonna Henriquez castle, which was the seat of the county ship of Modica. Then it was being used as a prison, now it’s been transformed into a Multipurpose Civic Museum.

The church of San Giovanni Battista, patron saint of the city, is beautiful as is the late Baroque church of Santa Maria delle Grazie overlooking Piazza del Popolo, the most important crossroads of the city.

And finally, the civil buildings – there are many palaces to admire, expressions of Ippari Art Nouveau: Palazzo Carfì, Palazzo Battaglia-Garrasi, and Palazzo Ciancio Fontana to name just a few.

If you happen to be visiting during Easter time, we recommend you attend the sacred function on Good Friday in Piazza Sei Martiri della Libertà (renamed Piazza Calvario due to a temple there from the second half of the nineteenth century), because it is one of the most evocative events in the entire Iblean area.

Finally, the beautiful Riserva naturale del Pino d’Aleppo (Nature Reserve of the Aleppo Pine), between the municipalities of Vittoria, Comiso and Ragusa, deserves a mention: the last plantation of Pinus halepensis was created in 1990 precisely to safeguard this plant species together with the microenvironment of wild flora and fauna that lives here.
