Crossroads of city life in the past, Piazza San Giovanni stands in front of the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista. Its Baroque appearance is the heart of the old town of Ragusa
Books, music, but also good food, theatre, and shows. Ragusa offers quality events all year round that attract thousands of visitors from all over Sicily and beyond. Tourists who are in the city in those days are fascinated by the great human warmth and cultural richness that the city gives off.
There are numerous summer events, but also winter in Ragusa is livened up by various theatre and music festivals: Melodica, Ibla Classica International for music; the season at the Donnafugata Theatre and Palchi Diversi (Different Stages) for the theatre (the latter moves to the beautiful backdrop of the Castle of Donnafugata for the summer version Palchi Diversi Estate al castello), to name but a few.
In short, Ragusa is to be lived all year round!

In short, Ragusa is to be lived all year round!
The main hub of city life in the past, the heart of the old town of upper Ragusa, Piazza San Giovanni welcomes you with its grandeur.
It is even more beautiful, thanks to important redevelopment work carried out recently.
It is rectangular in shape – on one side it is bordered by c.so Italia, one of the main city roads, while on the other side it is parallel to c.so Vittorio Veneto. One of the two longest sides is instead dotted with bars and restaurants: here you can relax and taste typical local products - restaurateurs will be happy to advise you. For centuries, this square has been a place of business, meetings, and news passed on by word of mouth: births, deaths, engagements, fuitine (elopements), family matters and money, in short, gossip and truth. Today not as much, but it still remains an important crossroads for the city.
From the square the elegant staircase opens out that leads to the elevated churchyard of the cathedral of San Giovanni Battista. In front of it is the former Palazzo Ina, known for its architectural atypicality that stands out among the Iblean Baroque. A building that does not fit the sinuosity of the context and for this reason often the subject of redevelopment proposals and even demolition.
But how was Ragusa born?
The turning point in the city's history was the 1693 earthquake. Before that, the only town was Ragusa Ibla. Frightened by the earthquake, the new agricultural business classes decided to rebuild their homes higher up, on the hill, while the nobles remained "faithful" to their Ibla, preferring to restore their Baroque palaces, many of which are still inhabited by their descendants.
A fun fact: the historical rivalry of the time between the two churches and between the respective popular factions had a great bearing on the matter. There was San Giorgio, matrix of Ragusa Ibla, supported by the sangiorgiari, and San Giovanni, also from ancient matrix roots, supported by the sangiovannari. It was in fact the latter who saw in the earthquake the chance of emancipation from their counterparts. A few days after the earthquake, in the middle of the piano del Patro, today Piazza San Giovanni, they built their parish seat, a small shack made out of wooden boards. The history of Upper Ragusa had begun...
