An example of modern architecture, Piazza Matteotti houses some of the most important buildings in the city life of Ragusa. The fountain by the sculptor Carmelo Cappello stands out in the middle

Not everything is about Baroque in Ragusa – did you know that it also has a modern soul? An example of this is the imposing Piazza Matteotti, better known as Piazza Poste, because the headquarters of the Italian Post Office is there.

A large open space overlooked by some of the most important buildings of city life. Meanwhile, Palazzo di Città, the aforementioned Palazzo Poste, a majestic building from the 1930s dominates the entire square with its nine-column façade surmounted by as many statues. Following on, on the shorter side is the elegant building that once housed the Bank of Italy, and opposite, some stately buildings

Once used as a city car park, a few years ago it was entirely redeveloped and turned into a pedestrian area, while the first covered car park in the city was built below it.

There are two monuments that you can admire here. The first is the Fontana per Curve d’acqua  (Fountain for Water Curves) with dolphins in bas-relief, created by the artist Carmelo Cappello in the late fifties: it recaptures the art of the Ragusan master sculptor, famous all over the world for his curves and marked ellipses. On the left side, adjacent to via Mario Rapisardi that runs alongside the square, stands the memorial monument, a clear example of fascist architecture, to the post and telecommunications workers who died in the war.

Books, music, but also good food, theatre, and showsRagusa offers quality events all year round that attract thousands of visitors from all over Sicily and beyond. Tourists who are in the city in those days are fascinated by the great human warmth and cultural richness that the city gives off.

There are numerous summer events, but also winter in Ragusa is livened up by various theatre and music festivals: Melodica, Ibla Classica International for music; the season at the Donnafugata Theatre and Palchi Diversi (Different Stages) for the theatre (the latter moves to the beautiful backdrop of the Castle of Donnafugata for the summer version Palchi Diversi Estate al castello), to name but a few.

In short, Ragusa is to be lived all year round!
