Piazza Libertà in Ragusa is perhaps the most beautiful example of fascist architecture in Sicily. The square was designed by the architect La Padula and inaugurated by the Duce himself in 1937.

Books, music, but also good food, theatre, and showsRagusa offers quality events all year round that attract thousands of visitors from all over Sicily and beyond. Tourists who are in the city in those days are fascinated by the great human warmth and cultural richness that the city gives off.

There are numerous summer events, but also winter in Ragusa is livened up by various theatre and music festivals: Melodica, Ibla Classica International for music; the season at the Donnafugata Theatre and Palchi Diversi (Different Stages) for the theatre (the latter moves to the beautiful backdrop of the Castle of Donnafugata for the summer version Palchi Diversi Estate al castello), to name but a few.

In short, Ragusa is to be lived all year round!

A crowd of 30,000 welcomed him with a cheer. It was 1937 and Benito Mussolini arrived in Ragusa to inaugurate the new Piazza Mussolini, which later became Piazza Impero and finally, Piazza Libertà. Its size and linearity will amaze you.

It was designed by architects Francesco Fichera and Ernesto Bruno La Padula. But it was actually La Padula who designed it in the shape of a U, as it still is today. It was to be a symbol of the pomp of the fascist party in Ragusa, which had just been established as a province. And in fact, the effect is big, spectacular, and monumental. Perhaps the most beautiful fascist architecture square in Sicily that had the undisputed advantage of being perfectly set in an older urban setting. You’ll see what we mean.

The Littoria tower, from the name of the neighbourhood at that time, from which Mussolini looked out to deliver his speech to the crowd, the shrine dedicated to the unknown soldier, the Casa della G.I.L., (the Italian Fascist Youth), the Casa del Mutilato e del Combattente (House of the War Wounded and the Serviceman), the Casa del Fascio (Fascist Party), and the Palace of the Provincial Council of the Economy (now the Chamber of Commerce): Piazza Mussolini immediately became the centre of the new "provincial" life of Ragusa.

Today it maintains its role as the central hub of the city's road network, connecting the oldest district of the city with its most recent.
