What is there to see in Comiso? The remains of an ancient Roman spa, the only Pagoda della pace (Peace Pagoda) in Italy, the Museo civico di Storia Naturale (Civic Museum of Natural History), the Gesualdo Bufalino Foundation, and much more.

Books, music, but also good food, theatre, and showsRagusa offers quality events all year round that attract thousands of visitors from all over Sicily and beyond. Tourists who are in the city in those days are fascinated by the great human warmth and cultural richness that the city gives off.

There are numerous summer events, but also winter in Ragusa is livened up by various theatre and music festivals: Melodica, Ibla Classica International for music; the season at the Donnafugata Theatre and Palchi Diversi (Different Stages) for the theatre (the latter moves to the beautiful backdrop of the Castle of Donnafugata for the summer version Palchi Diversi Estate al castello), to name but a few.

In short, Ragusa is to be lived all year round!

In short, Ragusa is to be lived all year round!

It was the birthplace of the writer Gesualdo Bufalino (he called it the City Theatre), houses the remains of a Roman spa complex from the 2nd century AD, has extremely pure water, and houses the Pagoda della Pace (Peace Pagoda), the only one in Italy and one of four throughout Europe. Comiso stands about twenty kilometres from Ragusa in the Hyblaean valley.

You may remember it for the international politics issue of the 1980s. In fact, a NATO base, which hosted cruise missiles during the Cold War, stood here. Today, the former military premises have been partly abandoned and partly converted into a civilian airport but during those years, thousands of pacifists from all over the world settled in the hills around the town to demonstrate against the American base. In 1986 the pacifists dismantled their tents, but the monk Morishita, who the people of Comiso were now used to seeing walking through the city, decided to stay and build a pagoda right where the protesters’ camps had been. Morishita is still there, and his peace pagoda continues to host the faithful and the curious.

What is there to see in Comiso?
The Roman baths for sure, known as the Terma Imperiale, are located next to the central square of the town, and piazza Fonte Diana, the first residential nucleus of the city, today animated by bars and restaurants. There are also important palaces overlooking the square: Palazzo Leopardi-Romano, Palazzo Iacono, Palazzo Criscione and the Palazzo Comunale. Going down from via San Biagio you arrive at the Castello Aragonese, dating back to the thirteenth century. Today, part of it has been transformed into a municipal theatre, the Teatro Naselli, while the rest of the building is still privately owned. Right in front of the castle you can admire the church of San Biagio, patron saint of the city – it is one of the three most important churches in Comiso, the other two are the cathedral of Santa Maria delle Stelle, the mother church, and the basilica of Maria SS. dell’Annunziata

What else?
The Museo Civico di Storia Naturale (Civic Museum of Natural History) has an extraordinary paleontological and zoological section – we’re talking about 10,000 fossil finds from various geological eras, 2,000 naturalized terrestrial and marine animals, and the most important cetology collection in southern Italy. And then there’s the Bufalino Foundation, which preserves the precious "Gesualdo Bufalino Fund", consisting among other things of the writer's private library of about 10,000 volumes.
