It is the land of PDO Monti Iblei oil, of wine, and of pork meat. It is the city of museums, and the balcony of Sicily. A few kilometres from Ragusa, stands Chiaramonte Gulfi.

Books, music, but also good food, theatre, and showsRagusa offers quality events all year round that attract thousands of visitors from all over Sicily and beyond. Tourists who are in the city in those days are fascinated by the great human warmth and cultural richness that the city gives off.

There are numerous summer events, but also winter in Ragusa is livened up by various theatre and music festivals: Melodica, Ibla Classica International for music; the season at the Donnafugata Theatre and Palchi Diversi (Different Stages) for the theatre (the latter moves to the beautiful backdrop of the Castle of Donnafugata for the summer version Palchi Diversi Estate al castello), to name but a few.

In short, Ragusa is to be lived all year round!

The balcony of Sicily – this is what the small town of Chiaramonte Gulfi, about fifteen kilometres from Ragusa, is called. You really must visit it: it's pretty on the outside and flavourful on the inside. It is the home of PDO Monti Iblei oil (you only need to taste a few drops on a slice of bread to understand what delicacy we are talking about), good wine (Nero d'Avola, Insolia, or even better Cerasuolo DOCG), table grapes, the PGI table grapes of Mazzarrone also come from here  – in fact, there are vineyards and olive groves everywhere in the surrounding countryside – , but also of the pig, pork meat, which triumphs in different dishes, and mushrooms.

Chiaramonte Gulfi stands on a hill further north of Ragusa, in fact its winters are colder than those of the county capital and it often snows. It welcomes tourists with its simplicity and pure mountain air.
The churches are definitely worth a visit, such as the mother church dedicated to Santa Maria La Nova, the church of San Giovanni, and that of Santa Maria del Gesù. The patron saint of the town is san Vito, and the religious building dedicated to him is also nice. The famous Sanctuary of S. Maria la Vetere, known as the Sanctuary of Gulfi, deserves a special mention: it rises in the valley below, where ancient Gulfi once stood, and annexes an early Christian structure, its medieval extension and finally, the eighteenth-century renovation.

Going back to the panorama: from the municipal villa you can look out over the whole of south-eastern Sicily right up to the Mediterranean Sea and even admire Mount Etna.

But you didn’t expect Chiaramonte Gulfi to also be the city of museums, did you? It houses so many: the Museum of Olive Oil, the Museum of Embroidery and the Sicilian Parade, the Ornithological Museum, the Museum of Military Historical Relics, and the Museum of Sacred Art, to mention a few.

Finally, there’s the wonderful pine forest that surrounds the town: it’s the ‘green lung’ for the entire area; in winter it’s painted snow white, while in summer it gives cool shelter on hot, sunny days.
