The church of Santa Maria Maddalena welcomes you in all its simplicity. Located along c.so XXV Aprile in Ragusa Ibla, in the stretch between piazza Pola and the Giardino Ibleo, this church has ancient origins. In the seventeenth century it was flanked by the "spitale nuovo" (the new hospital): it welcomed the poor in its small rooms and in its infirmary. Then the 1693 earthquake destroyed it almost entirely, leaving only a small corridor and a small room behind, which has now been transformed into a chapel.
The interior of the church is embellished by some works by local authors, such as two paintings from 1800 depicting the Anime del Purgatorio (the Souls of Purgatory), and San Tommaso; a painting of Maria Maddalena (Mary Magdalene) flanked by the statues of santa Lucia and sant’Agata, and the coat of arms of the Nicastro family, who lived right next to the religious building and had their own personal chapel in the church.
