She admires the city life that flows in front of her and catches your eye with her perfect architectural balance between the late Baroque of Ragusa and neoclassicism. The church of the college of Maria Santissima Addolorata, renamed by the Ragusans the church of the Badia, overlooks c.so Italia and carefully observes the comings and goings of piazza San Giovanni. On the right she acknowledges the cathedral, on the left she has a glimpse of Ibla.
The complex occupies an entire block and groups the church and the convent together, once used as a women's college established by the noblewoman Felicia Schininà of the Marquises of Sant'Elia to take care of the education of the daughters of the rich aristocracy and the upper bourgeoisie of the city. In the following decades it served as the Courthouse, and then as a university seat.
Treat yourself to a break of beauty, by admiring this masterpiece of city architecture. If on the outside the imposing Corinthian columns embellish the façade, it is upon entering that the church of the Badia shows all its splendour. The circular plan preceded by a pronaos is cadenced by Ionic columns with Corinthian capitals, and the walls are punctuated by altars carved into large recesses. The white limestone floor with inlays of bituminous rock is beautiful, the paintings by the Sicilian painter Tommaso Pollace are exquisite, and the main altar, protected by a wrought iron gate, is intimate.
