Macchia Foresta del Fiume Irminio Nature Reserve: the Mediterranean scrub and typical fauna of the area animate this uncontaminated world around the mouth of the River Irminio
The sand dunes enrich the landscape of the Macchia Foresta del Fiume Irminio Nature Reserve, a natural area protected by the Regione Siciliana that extends around the mouth of the Irminio river. We are in the territory between Ragusa and that of Scicli.
The area, interspersed with sandy coasts and cliffs overlooking the waters of the Mediterranean, is characterized by typical Mediterranean scrub. Next to juniper, sea rocket, salsola, sea lily, poplar, and willow – but you’ll unearth other particular species along the banks of the river down to the mouth – is the fauna, composed mainly of birds that in their migrations along the Africa-Europe axis seek refreshment right in the reserve. And if the birds animate the skies above the Irminio, frogs and toads, lizards, foxes, and rabbits liven up the aquatic and sandy areas instead.
