Ragusa is called the city of three bridges. It actually stands on three different hills, connected by the same number of bridges: the bridge of the Cappuccini, the new bridge and the bridge of San Vito. We’ll tell you something about them.
Did you know that Ragusa is called the city of three bridges? They are the bridge of the Cappuccini, inaugurated in the mid-nineteenth century, the Pennavaria bridge, built in the 1930s, and finally, the Giovanni XXIII bridge of 1964, called the bridge of San Vito. It is thanks to them that the city was able to expand, overcoming the great physical limitations of the valleys around it.
A bit of history.
After the 1693 earthquake, the city was built on Patro hill. Soon, however, there was a need to expand especially southwards and get closer to the asphalt deposits that the local community had started to use from the early nineteenth century. Building a bridge that would allow them to connect Patro hill with the nearby Cucinello hill was necessary. And so, the bridge of the Cappuccini was born.
A few decades later, thanks to an economic boom that resulted in the remarkable demographic and vehicular development of the city, the bridge of the Cappuccini proved too small and too precarious. So, the Pennavaria bridge, or new bridge, sprang up, followed by the third bridge, the bridge of San Vito, less than thirty years later.
Today, Ragusa stretches out over the Corrado, Pendente and Selvaggio hills; its three bridges are still there, although their fates have been different.
The old bridge, that’s how the bridge of the Cappuccini was renamed, was pedestrianised in the 1980s and completely restored – a stroll along it to admire the beautiful view is a must!
The new bridge, for decades affected by very intense traffic, became part of a redevelopment project for the old town, which repeatedly changed its usability. Today, it is used much less compared to the past.
And finally, the bridge of San Vito that remains the busiest of the three and is an essential arterial road for the city.
